        "content": "<p>In Cirebon City, prices of various types of chillies in traditional\nmarkets have experienced a sharp increase. This follows a decline in\nchilli production at the farmer level due to pest attacks and extreme\nweather.<\/p>\n<p>At the Jagasatru Main Market in Cirebon City, the price of red bird\u2019s\neye chillies has once again skyrocketed to Rp 85,000 per kilogram.\nPreviously, the price of this commodity had dropped to Rp 70,000 per\nkilogram.<\/p>\n<p>Not only red bird\u2019s eye chillies, but red chillies have also risen by\nRp 5,000 to Rp 40,000 per kilogram. Similarly, green bird\u2019s eye chillies\nare now Rp 50,000 per kilogram.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe prices have been rising since five days ago,\u201d said a trader at\nthe local market, Arya.<\/p>\n<p>The rising chilli prices at the main market are expected to be even\nhigher in other traditional markets or at retail trader levels. This is\nbecause market traders and retailers buy the chillies they sell from the\nmain market.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that the increase in prices of various chilli\ncommodities is caused by reduced supply from farmers. Therefore, he\npredicts that chilli prices will continue to rise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChilli stock is decreasing; goods are hard to come by,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the skyrocketing chilli prices have caused turnover for\ntraders like himself to decline. This is because consumers are reducing\ntheir chilli purchases upon learning of the price increases.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, a chilli farmer from Majalengka Regency, Teguh, said that\nchilli harvest yields have indeed declined in recent times. This is due\nto extreme weather and pest attacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe weather is extreme right now, so there are supply constraints.\nIt\u2019s not scarce; there is some. But pest and disease attacks are high,\u201d\nhe said.<\/p>",
