Family to confront police on fatal beating<\/p>\n

A man being detained at the Kelapa Gading Police station in North
\nJakarta died in his cell on Tuesday as a result of a severe
\nbeating.<\/p>\n
The man, Gatot Subroto, 39, was arrested by North Jakarta
\nPolice detectives on April 24 on suspicion of buying stolen cars.<\/p>\n
Lawyers for his family, Rizal Haliman and Erik Saat, said on
\nWednesday they would file a complaint with the National Police as
\nsoon as the family had gotten over the initial shock and grief of
\nthe death.<\/p>\n
\"Police informed Gatot's family about his death on Tuesday
\nafternoon. They said he had been beaten up by other detainees,\"
\nsaid Rizal, adding that he last saw Gatot on April 30.<\/p>\n
He said the family had doubts about the police's account of
\nevents.<\/p>\n
\"They want a clear explanation from the police because Gatot
\nwas supposed to be in police custody. They must be held
\nresponsible for the safety of their detainees.\"<\/p>\n
Gatot was being held at the Kelapa Gading Police station
\nbecause the North Jakarta Police Headquarters is being renovated
\nand no holding cells were available.<\/p>\n
Rizal said Gatot's body was covered with bruises -- a large
\nbruise on his chest, a bluish-colored bruise on his stomach and
\nseveral bruises covering his back.<\/p>\n
An autopsy was performed on Gatot at the Cipto Mangunkusumo
\nGeneral Hospital morgue but the victim's family has reportedly
\nbeen denied access to the results.<\/p>\n
After the autopsy, Gatot was buried in his hometown of
\nSurabaya on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Lawyer Erik said the family would also report the case to the
\nNational Commission on Human Rights and the House of
\nRepresentatives next week.<\/p>\n
\"The reason for the family filing a report with the National
\nPolice was because we thought they might handle the case much
\nfaster,\" he said.<\/p>\n
North Jakarta Police deputy chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli
\ndeclined to comment on the matter when contacted by The Jakarta
\nPost.<\/p>",
