Families spend holiday trapped in floods<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): At least 167 families in Pondok Pinang and
\ndozens of others in Bintaro, South Jakarta, were trapped in water
\nall Tuesday night.<\/p>\n
Heavy rains hit several other city areas causing traffic jams.<\/p>\n
A city flood control official, Broto, said yesterday it began
\nraining 5 p.m. Tuesday.<\/p>\n
He said the families refused food and other donations from
\nsocial services.<\/p>\n
\"But families in the Foreign Affairs Ministry housing complex
\nin Bintaro asked only for a life boat,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The other families were in the Civil Servant Cooperatives
\nAssociation housing complex which is flood prone.<\/p>\n
A few families have their own boats and said it was hard to
\nsell their homes because of the flooding.<\/p>\n
The complex lies near to the Pesanggrahan river.<\/p>\n
Broto said rain inundated the houses at 11:30 p.m. and reached
\nbetween 50 to 120 centimeters.<\/p>\n
The water, which reached between 100 cm and 120 cm in nine
\nneighborhood units in Pondok Pinangict, started to ease at 4:30
\na.m, he said.<\/p>\n
Tuesday's downpour caused heavy congestion on Jl. Gunung
\nSahari and the Ancol toll road in North Jakarta, Jl. Tanah Abang
\nin Central Jakarta, and the artery road in Pondok Pinang near
\nPermata Hijau in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Drivers were trapped in bumper-to-bumper traffic on several
\nother roads.<\/p>\n
\"It took up to four hours to reach the Ancol area from Cawang
\ntoll road,\" one driver said.<\/p>\n
A container overturned on the Ancol toll road, worsening the
\ncongestion. At least 20 people died in last year in floods during
