Fakfak regent mobbed<\/p>\n
FAKFAK, Irian Jaya: Just two days after assuming his new post,
\nWahiddin Puarara, the new regent of Fakfak, was mobbed by some
\n150 people on Sunday, with the regent's adjutant shooting one of
\nthe attackers.<\/p>\n
Unidentified people severely beat Wahiddin, his adjutant and
\ndriver and destroyed three official vehicles in the village of
\nWeyati, some eight kilometers away from Fakfak.<\/p>\n
Wahiddin and his driver were reportedly treated at Fakfak
\nHospital.<\/p>\n
There were no clear motives at the time to explain the mob's
\nsudden attack on Wahiddin and his entourage as they left an aid
\nhandover ceremony for Weyati.<\/p>\n
The regent's group dispersed as the mob intercepted and
\nattacked them, and deputy regent Fransiscus Hambore and his wife
\nmanaged to escape to the neighboring village of Pasir Putih,
\nabout three kilometers from Weyati.<\/p>\n
Local police chief Lt. Col. Totok Kasmiarto said officers had
\nbeen deployed to Weyati. \"The officers failed to calm the angry
\ncrowd. They had to open fire,\" Totok said.<\/p>\n
Totok described the attack as an action which reached a
