Fake diplomas keep lecturer employed<\/p>\n
PURWOKERTO, Central Java (JP): For five years, Djar had
\nbeen part of the senior academic staff of Soedirman University.
\nOnly recently did the university discover that every one of his
\ndegrees -- from undergraduate to doctorate -- were fake!<\/p>\n
Rector Rubiyanto Misman admitted that the university had been
\ncareless and duped by the 35-year-old phony.<\/p>\n
\"We never thought or ever suspected that Djar was a fake
\ndoctor,\" he said here Saturday.<\/p>\n
\"Since he arrived at the university all those years ago we
\nproudly accepted him\".<\/p>\n
Djar had apparently cleverly forged his documents and was
\nimmediately accepted for a teaching position in 1993. Because of
\nhis high credentials he was also quickly accorded a civil servant
\ngrade of IVB.<\/p>\n
The deception was recently uncovered when the university was
\nabout to appoint him a graduate supervisor. For this new post the
\nuniversity had to update their files and it was during this
\nprocess that many discrepancies began to unfold.<\/p>\n
Djar had claimed to possess two undergraduate degrees, on
\nliterature and psychology, from the prestigious University of
\nIndonesia, while he supposedly received his doctorate from the
\nSunan Kalijaga State Islamic Institute in Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n
However when checked upon, both universities said they had
\nnever presented a degree to Djar.<\/p>\n
Rubiyanto did not say how Djar could have been accepted in the
\nfirst place without his degrees first being verified.<\/p>\n
\"This is both a lesson and an embarrassment for us,\" he said.<\/p>\n
