        "content": "<p>Fairer use of natural riches called for<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Representatives of traditional communities, the<br>\nbusiness sector, non-governmental organizations, scholars and the<br>\ngovernment ended a three-day gathering here on Thursday to<br>\nformulate strategies for sustainable and community friendly<br>\nnatural resource exploitation.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It was the first time all parties involved in natural<br>\nresource exploitation sat down together,&quot; State Minister of the<br>\nEnvironment Sonny Keraf said of the National Conference on<br>\nNatural Resource Management.<\/p>\n<p>Outspoken economist Faisal Basri from the University of<br>\nIndonesia said that while the country heavily relied on natural<br>\nexploitation for its development, sustainability was never a<br>\nconcern.<\/p>\n<p>Among notable recommendations drafted in the meeting was for<br>\ngreater attention to local concerns and aspirations in the<br>\nformulation of the development of policies and a need for<br>\nregulations pertaining to natural resources with emphasis on the<br>\nrights of traditional societies.<\/p>\n<p>With the theme &quot;Toward Just and Sustainable Natural Resource<br>\nManagement for Community Welfare&quot;, the meeting also stressed the<br>\nneed for the state to reduce its monopoly in determining<br>\nenvironmental management.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the organizing committee, Julia Kalmirah from the<br>\nIndonesian Forum for Environment (Walhi), said results of the<br>\nconference would be submitted to the National Development<br>\nPlanning Agency (Bappenas).<\/p>\n<p>The agency, which assists the president in implementing<br>\nnational policy, is scheduled to submit the national development<br>\nprogram for 2001-2005 to the House of Representatives on June 1.<br>\n(08)<\/p>",
