Factory probed over pollution<\/p>\n
PURWAKARTA, West Java: The environmental impact management
\nagency (Bapedal) and national police headquarters are currently
\ninvestigating alleged polluting activities by PT Inda Bharat
\nRayon (IBR), Antara reported.<\/p>\n
IBR, which runs a rayon plant, is suspected of dumping
\nindustrial waste into Citarum River, increasing the Biological
\nOxygen Demand and Chemical Oxygen Demand of the water to above
\nthe permissible level.<\/p>\n
The waste is also said to cause siltation in the river while
\nfumes from the plant cause \"intolerable air pollution\".<\/p>\n
Bapedal and the police have conducted inquiries since last
\nmonth and are presently gathering data and witnesses to file
\ncharges, Head of the local government's environmental office
\nBambang Sutrisno said.<\/p>\n
The government, he said, has repeatedly reprimanded IBR and
\nresidents of surrounding villages have often staged protests.
\nIBR, on the other hand, responds that its Rp 6 billion water
\ntreatment unit has yet to be completed.(pwn)<\/p>",
