Former Deputy Minister of Manpower, Immanuel Ebenezer, admitted to\nfeeling tense ahead of the reading of the indictment in the alleged\nextortion case involving K3 (Occupational Health and Safety) certificate\nprocessing at the Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker). Nevertheless, Noel\nemphasised that he continues to support anti-corruption efforts.<\/p>\n
These statements were made by Noel before attending the sentencing\nhearing at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Monday (18\/5). \u201cFirst of all,\nwe are facing this; our mental strength is there. We hope that the\nPublic Prosecutor will demand the lowest possible sentence for us,\u201d Noel\ntold reporters.<\/p>\n
Noel stated that he hopes the legal process he is undergoing can be\nconcluded quickly without dragging on, noting that life in detention is\nnot easy. \u201cWe hope this process ends swiftly. It shouldn\u2019t drag on; it\nis exhausting being in detention because we know that being a detainee\nis unpleasant,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Despite the situation, Noel expressed appreciation for the services\nat the KPK detention centre, which he described as quite good. He even\nreceived medical attention after suffering from severe toothache in\nrecent days. \u201cYesterday I had a toothache, and my face became swollen.\nFortunately, the Head of the Detention Centre and the guards were\nresponsive and took me directly to the hospital,\u201d he remarked, jokingly\nadding that his face looked as if it had been \u2018beaten by other\ninmates\u2019.<\/p>\n
On this occasion, Noel also requested moral support from the public.\nHe ensured that his struggle regarding labour issues would not cease\ndespite facing legal charges. \u201cI hope that once this case is resolved,\nmy struggle will not stop. We are still fighting,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
When asked about his concerns regarding the prosecutor\u2019s\ndemands\u2014noting that several defendants in other corruption cases have\nreceived high sentences\u2014Noel admitted to feeling human fear. \u201cI\u2019m not\nafraid, but I am nervous,\u201d Noel said with a small laugh. \u201cHumanly\nspeaking, I do have fear.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nonetheless, he reiterated his hope that the public prosecutors and\nthe panel of judges would provide a light sentence and verdict. \u201cI ask\nfor the support of my media colleagues; I hope the Public Prosecutor and\nthe judges decide on the lowest possible sentence. But regardless, our\ncommitment to fighting corruption does not stop,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
The alleged extortion case involving K3 certification also involves\nseveral other officials and civil servants within the Ministry of\nManpower. Noel is accused of receiving billions of rupiah in\ngratifications and one unit of a Ducati Scrambler motorcycle related to\nthe processing of K3 certifications within the Ministry.
