Facility for female night-shift workers<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Companies employing female workers at night
\nshould provide their employees with transportation home, as
\nstipulated by government regulation, the All Indonesia Workers
\nUnion (SPSI) reiterated yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"Female workers who are on night shift have to be taken to and
\nfrom work by the companies employing them,\" said Salam Sumangat,
\nchairman of the SPSI's Jakarta branch.<\/p>\n
Sumangat said 15 percent of the 86,000 female workers in
\nJakarta work as hostesses in night clubs or as waitresses in
\nrestaurants.<\/p>\n
Despite a government regulation that any company with more
\nthan 25 workers should have an SPSI unit, few night clubs or
\nrestaurants have the units.<\/p>\n
The government allows companies to employ female workers at
\nnight if they provide additional benefits, such as transportation
\nand extra meals. Employers who violate the regulation face up to
\nthree months imprisonment and a fine of up to Rp 50,000
\n(US$22.50).<\/p>\n
Sumangat said that taking female workers home at night is
\nobligatory for the safety of the workers, given that public
\ntransportation is difficult to get. (03)<\/p>",
