ExxonMobil clarifies<\/p>\n
We read with interest your story ExxonMobil accused of
\npolluting environment with hazardous waste (The Jakarta Post,
\nNov. 20). There are a number of important points that I would
\nlike to make to correct the inaccurate and misleading statement
\nabout EMOI in the article.<\/p>\n
1. For over 30 years, ExxonMobil Oil Indonesia Inc. (EMOI) has
\nconducted its operations in Aceh with great concern for the
\nenvironment. Extensive safety, health and environmental
\nmanagement systems are in place to effectively handle any
\nbyproducts of our oil and gas business that need special
\nattention.<\/p>\n
2. It is EMOI's policy to comply with all applicable laws and
\nregulations regarding hazardous materials and we have systems in
\nplace to manage waste in accordance with environmental laws and
\nregulations.<\/p>\n
3. EMOI environmental management systems are consistent with GOI
\nregulations and
\nExxonMobil's global company policies and practices. We
\nrigorrously monitor all of our operations in Aceh and report the
\nresults of our activities to the appropriate authorities at all
\nlevels in the government of Indonesia. We work together with
\nlocal agencies and communities to investigate any environmental
\nconcerns raised by outside parties.<\/p>\n
EMOI strongly encourages concern and respect for the
\nenvironment, and regularly emphasizes every employee's
\nresponsibility for achieving high environmental performance and
\nensuring safe and efficient operating practices.<\/p>\n
We manage our business with the goals of preventing incidents
\nand strictly controlling any effects of our business on the
\nsurrounding environment and communities.<\/p>\n
