Extortion by ex-convicts<\/p>\n

Stories such these have been reported in the media recently
\nwhere passengers of Patas (air-conditioned express buses) serving
\nthe Ciputat-Kota, Blok M-Kota and Lebak-Kota routes are extorted
\nby so-called ex-convicts.<\/p>\n
"We don't want to impose on you, but we need money to return
\nto our hometowns and stop committing crime in Jakarta. A thousand
\nor two rupiah will surely not make you poor," say these men.<\/p>\n
Normally working in threes, one would "request" while the
\nother two guard the exit doors. Most passengers, especially the
\nwomen, usually comply with their wishes.<\/p>\n
Unlike street musicians, these men are often rude to the
\npassengers.<\/p>\n
From my colleagues' and my experience, these men usually board
\nthe bus at Benhill and alight at the BNI building in Losari,
\nwhile those who get on at Harmoni, get off at the National
\nMonument.<\/p>\n
Probably out of fear, the bus conductors and drivers remain in
\nsilent disregard.<\/p>\n
Shouldn't passengers who are paying a Rp 3,000 fare on these
\nbuses receive better security?<\/p>\n
I would like to know what the Jakarta Police chief has got to
\nsay regarding this matter.<\/p>\n
