Extortion allegations queried<\/p>\n

Internal affairs officers from the Jakarta Police are questioning
\nthe head of the Pasanggrahan Police subprecinct, Comr. Sudiyono,
\nover allegations he extorted Rp 30 million (US$3,000) from a
\nsuspect in a case he was handling.<\/p>\n
Internal affairs chief Sr. Comr. Anwaruddin said that as of
\nWednesday his officers were still questioning Sudiyono over the
\nallegations he extorted money from a man identified only as
\nJulius.<\/p>\n
\"We are still investigating the case. We are questioning him.
\nHowever, we have not declared him a suspect because we are still
\ntrying to determine whether there is sufficient evidence,\"
\nAnwaruddin told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
He promised that Sudiyono would be placed under arrest if
\nsufficient evidence was found to warrant criminal charges.<\/p>\n
Anwaruddin said Julius, a suspect in an ongoing criminal case,
\nfiled a complaint last week saying Sudiyono demanded money in
\nexchange for dropping the case.<\/p>\n
Two other officers, identified as First Insp. Syamsuddin and
\nSecond Adj. Insp. P. Daulay, have also been questioned in
\nconnection with the case.<\/p>\n
City police spokesman Sr. Comr. I Ketut Untung Yoga Ana
\ncriticized the media for focusing on this case, saying extortion
\nwas common in other government institutions. He accused the media
\nof being biased against the police.<\/p>\n
\"There is nothing special here. It only became a big case
\nbecause those reporting on it have a prejudice against the
\npolice,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Legal and social observers agreed that this case was not
\nspecial, saying this kind of extortion happened frequently
\nbecause of a lack of control over police officers.<\/p>\n
Earlier, three police officers, including a commissioner, were
\narrested and charged with extorting Rp 64 million from a Japanese
\nbusinessman.<\/p>\n
The three officers, two from National Police Headquarters and
\nthe third from Jakarta Police Headquarters, were charged with
\nthe extortion of a 56-year-old Japanese national. The officers
\nreportedly did a routine stop on the Japanese man and threatened
\nto put him in jail unless he paid them Rp 100 million because he
\nwas not carrying his passport.<\/p>",
