The case of alleged verbal sexual harassment by 16 students from the University of Indonesia's Faculty of Law originated from a leaked LINE group chat, revealed by one of the perpetrators to the victims in 2025. Despite initial knowledge of the offensive content, the victims hesitated to report it immediately, gathering more evidence in hopes the behaviour would cease, but ultimately pursued action after receiving the full conversation details. This revelation highlights the internal dynamics that can lead to the exposure of misconduct within academic circles, potentially influencing campus safety policies and legal proceedings.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The origins of the alleged verbal sexual
harassment case involving 16 students from the University of Indonesia’s
Faculty of Law (UI) through a group chat have finally been revealed. The
case began with the leak of a LINE social media group chat comprising
the 16 suspected perpetrators. One of the group members, who was also a
perpetrator, leaked the information to the victims. “Initially, one of
the group members, for certain reasons, ended up leaking that
information to the victims,” said the victims’ legal representative,
Timotius Rajagukguk, when met at the UI campus in Depok, West Java, on
Tuesday (14/4/2026). However, he did not explain in detail the reasons
behind the action. “There was a situation that ultimately forced him to
do it,” he said. The information about the group chat and its contents
was first leaked in 2025, although it was not detailed at the time. With
the leak of this information, the victims had actually known since 2025
that they were the objects of the alleged sexual harassment. “That’s why
when they saw it, they felt hurt, sad, heartbroken, ashamed, and so on,”
said Timotius. “But even if they wanted to report it at that time, they
would surely think, ‘Is this one chat enough for us to report?’” he
explained. Timotius revealed that the victims initially held back
despite knowing about it. They hoped the perpetrators’ actions would not
continue. The victims then began collecting the available evidence. In
the end, the perpetrator leaked the full content of the group
conversation to the victims. The evidence was then examined together by
the victims and their legal representative.
",
