Exporters awarded for perseverance<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto will present Primaniyarta
\nawards to 68 exporting companies for their distinguished
\nachievements and staying power during the last five years of slow
\nexport growth, an official announced yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"The award presentation, slated to take place at the State
\nPalace on Tuesday, is expected to encourage exports which were
\nflat over the last five years,\" Acting Chairman of the National
\nAgency for Export Development Arifin Lumban Gaol said.<\/p>\n
Arifin said that the government had set aside 78 awards but
\nthat only 68 exporters returned the questionnaires distributed by
\nthe Ministry of Trade.<\/p>\n
According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, the growth rate
\nof non-oil exports slowed from 27.67 percent in 1992 to 16.23
\npercent in 1993 and to 12.12 percent in 1994.<\/p>\n
Despite the slow growth, non-oil exports increased to US$23.3
\nbillion in 1992, $27.1 billion in 1993 and $30.3 billion in 1994.<\/p>\n
The ministry's data, provided by Arifin, indicates that the
\nperformance of non-oil exports was poor due to the flat growth in
\nthe exports of wood products, garments, textiles, shoes, fish,
\nmollusks and shellfish.<\/p>\n
The amount of commodities exported during the January-July
\nperiod of 1995 remained at the 1994 level of $8.1 billion.<\/p>\n
According to the bureau of statistics, 214 companies in total
\nwere eligible for the awards.<\/p>\n
\"In evaluating the nominated companies, we used statistics
\nprovided by various institutions,\" said Arifin.<\/p>\n
Clearance from Bank Indonesia, the Directorate General of Tax,
\nthe Environmental Impact Management Agency, the Directorate
\nGeneral of Customs and Excise and the Export Service Facilitating
\nAgency was required for the award nominees.<\/p>\n
The award winning companies classified as small had annual
\nexports totaling between $500,000 and $5 million, medium
\ncompanies exported between $5 million and $15 million, medium-big
\nbetween $15 million and $50 million and big companies were those
\nwith exports totaling more than $50 million.(kod)<\/p>",
