Export of live turtles foiled<\/p>\n
TANGERANG: Customs and Excise officers at the Soekarno-Hatta
\nInternational Airport have foiled the illegal export of 1,526
\nlive turtles from Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, to Ghuangzou,
\nChina, through the airport, an official said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Customs and Excise director Permana Agung told reporters that
\nhe assumed the turtles, which arrived from Banjarmasin last
\nFriday, were to be used for food and medicine.<\/p>\n
He said that the turtles were documented as live turtles by
\nthe sender UD Menara Mas of Jl. Kapten Tendean No. 19,
\nBanjarmasin, using Garuda flight GA 521. The senders did not have
\na document issued by the Ministry of Forestry stating that the
\nturtles were not a protected species under the Convention on
\nInternational Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and
\nFlora, known as a Cites document.<\/p>\n
The West Cengkareng Natural Resources Conservation Center said
\nthat the turtles consisted of two species: 1,423 Coura
\namboinensis turtles that required a Cites document, and 113 Biuku
\nbatagor baska, turtles. There is a ban on the export of Biuku
\nbatagor baska turtles.<\/p>\n
Permana said he had not notified the exporter, but he said he
\nwould send several officers to Kalimantan to investigate the
\nillegal business.<\/p>\n
In January, the officers also foiled the illegal export of 328
\nturtles sent by CV Agro Asia Tunggal from Balikpapan, East
\nKalimantan, to Hong Kong.<\/p>\n
Permana said the illegal export of turtles is against Law No.
\n5\/1990 on natural resources conservation, which carries a maximum
\nprison term of five years.--JP<\/p>",
