Expired cigarettes destroyed in Makassar<\/p>\n
Makassar Customs and Excises Office destroyed 250 boxes, or
\n151,388 packs, of expired cigarettes of various brands on
\nWednesday (see photo) in order to protect consumers as well as
\ndiscouraging distributors from putting expired cigarettes into
\nthe market.<\/p>\n
The cigarettes came from cities in Java, like Surabaya and
\nSemarang, and were confiscated during market operations by
\ncustoms and excises officials in Makassar.<\/p>\n
The customs and excises office was also investigating six
\ncases involving fake excise stickers, estimated to have caused
\nlosses of Rp 588 million (US$61,900) to the state, an official
\nsaid on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Head of the Makassar office of the Directorate General of
\nCustoms and Excises, Djuneidy Djason, said that of the six cases,
\nfour were in Makassar, one in South Sulawesi's Gowa regency and
\nanother in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi.<\/p>\n
From the six suspects, authorities confiscated 650 boxes of
\ncigarettes and 521,400 packs of cigarettes of various brands.<\/p>\n
Djuneidy said the cases were still under investigation, with
\nthe suspects allegedly using fake excise stickers.<\/p>\n
Currently, his office was waiting for the state-owned
\nsecurities paper and banknote printing company, which makes the
\nexcise sticker, to examine the excise stamps.<\/p>\n
Djuneidy said the six suspects, who were cigarette
\ndistributors, had been questioned but were not detained.<\/p>\n
The suspects face four years in jail, or a fine totaling 10
\ntimes the total excise that should have been paid. (JP\/Andi
