Jakarta (ANTARA) \u2013 Radityo Dharmaputra, a lecturer in International\nRelations at Airlangga University, has called on Indonesia and other\nmiddle-power nations to work together in navigating global dynamics.<\/p>\n
Radityo made the statement while speaking at a public discussion in\nJakarta on Tuesday (24 February), referring to the perception that the\nrole of the United Nations (UN) is no longer effective in addressing\nvarious global dynamics, including the ongoing four-year Russian\ninvasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndonesia does have a foreign policy principle to navigate global\ndynamics. However, in reality, major powers remain more dominant. If\nmiddle-power countries do not coordinate and cooperate, the world could\nreturn to an unimaginable state,\u201d he said during a discussion entitled\n\u2018Consistency in Upholding the UN Charter\u2019.<\/p>\n
Radityo believes that middle-power countries are highly dependent on\nthe security guaranteed by international norms and the UN Charter.\nWithout it, the Pacific region could become an arena where major powers\nrepeatedly take over the territories of other countries.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a major shift in the global order,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Referring to the situation where invasions and changes to national\nborders through military force are once again considered normal, the\nlecturer, who focuses on the study of Russia and Eurasia, stated that\nthis would set a dangerous precedent for Indonesia and other countries\nin Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n
\u201cCountries with border issues, including Indonesia, will face\nstrategic risks,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
According to Radityo, if the world begins to ignore international law\nand the UN Charter, this will also have a strategic impact on Indonesia,\nsuch as in the South China Sea, conflicts in border areas in Southeast\nAsia, and even extending to the Pacific.<\/p>\n
Therefore, he reminded that Indonesia, together with other\nmiddle-power countries, needs to take a more pragmatic and strategic\napproach so that powers do not have ample room to act without\nlimits.<\/p>\n
The normalisation of war and the tendency to follow the flow of\nnegotiations by major powers without critical reflection are not\ndevelopments that benefit Indonesia or the region, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cTherefore, it is important to remind the public and the government,\nas well as other middle-power countries, that action needs to be taken\nnow.
