Experts advise brain drain for Indonesia<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Overseas university and school graduates should
\nrush the foreign job markets rather return home to outdo their
\ndomestic competitors, educational observers agreed yesterday.<\/p>\n
Thoby Mutis, Director of the Post-graduate Program at Trisakti
\nUniversity, said yesterday the race for jobs would be unfair if
\nit pitted domestic against overseas graduates.<\/p>\n
\"Now the global market is rolling on, overseas graduates must
\ntake their chances of getting jobs abroad,\" Thoby said.<\/p>\n
A member of the House of Representatives Commission IX which
\noversees education and culture, Wuryanto, sided with Thoby,
\nsaying foreign university alumni would be head-and-shoulders
\nabove their domestic counterparts.<\/p>\n
\"Due to limited employment at home, overseas graduates are
\ncalled on to seek international level jobs,\" said Wuryanto of the
\nruling Golkar faction.<\/p>\n
Vice President Try Sutrisno said 130,000 Indonesian university
\ngraduates remained unemployed this year, most of them from the
\nsocial and cultural sciences. Try said the domestic formal job
\nmarket only managed to employ between 50 and 60 percent of
\nuniversity graduates annually.<\/p>\n
The two experts agreed that foreign university graduates were
\nwelcome to come home only to fill the shoes of expatriates.<\/p>\n
\"Overseas graduates may take part in domestic competition, but
\nonly to vie for vacancies at multinational companies operating in
\nthis country,\" Thoby was quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n
Thoby said Indonesians going international at multinational
\ncompanies would end the country's long-time reputation as a mere
\nexporter of maids and other cheap workers.<\/p>\n
He also suggested domestic universities initiate outward-
\nlooking efforts by admitting more foreign applicants, as other
\nSoutheast Asian countries have done.<\/p>\n
\"We can recruit experts from various field studies to run an
\ninternational-level university,\" Thoby said.<\/p>\n
He predicted that education would be a good prospective
\nbusiness for countries competing in a free market.<\/p>\n
\"All organizers of educational institutions should be alert to
