Jakarta (ANTARA) - Tourism expert from Andalas University, Sari\nLenggasting, is urging the management of the Mount Bromo area in East\nJava to strengthen risk-based mitigation by limiting activities and\nvisitor capacity during fire-prone periods.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring seasons with a high risk of fire, for example, visitor\ncapacity, certain activities, the use of fire, commercial activities,\nfilming, events, and other high-risk activities must be restricted based\non the daily risk level,\u201d Sari stated when contacted by ANTARA from\nJakarta on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Sari noted that managing Bromo requires more than just a fire\nextinguishing approach; it necessitates a disaster management and\ntourism crisis approach. This includes the recovery of the area, the\ntourism ecosystem, community livelihoods, and tourist confidence.<\/p>\n
During the recovery phase, she identified four necessary\ninterventions, starting with a rapid tourism impact assessment to\ncalculate the impact on jeep drivers, guides, homestays, traders, MSMEs,\nphotographers, horse providers, and informal workers.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, consumer protection should be provided through options\nfor refunds or rescheduling without penalties. Meanwhile, tourism\nlivelihood recovery should include measures such as the relaxation of\nbusiness obligations, micro working capital assistance, labour-intensive\nprogrammes, and visitor redistribution to alternative attractions and\ntourism villages deemed safe.<\/p>\n
She also assessed that recurring fires should serve as a signal for\nmanagers to shift their approach from reactive management to predictive\nrisk management.<\/p>\n
\u201cTherefore, in my view, the measure of success for Bromo\u2019s recovery\nis not how quickly tourists return, but how safely Bromo is reopened,\nhow quickly the community\u2019s economy recovers, and whether the risk of\nthe next fire is reduced,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
