Expert urges govt care for cataracts<\/p>\n
SEMARANG: The government should pay serious attention to
\nblindness caused by cataracts, as the some two million sufferers
\nacross the country will likely surge in the coming years, public
\nhealth expert Soebowo warned here on Sunday.<\/p>\n
\"The government should earnestly handle this matter, if not,
\nthen numbers will continue to increase, especially during times
\nof economic crisis,\" said Soebowo of Diponegoro University.<\/p>\n
He said that millions could avoid becoming visually impaired
\nif the government took concerted action on the matter.<\/p>\n
\"There is a direct relationship between blindness caused by
\ncataracts, and a low vitamin intake, particularly Vitamin A,\" he
\nargued.<\/p>\n
He said that cataract operations were quite expensive, about
\none to three million rupiah. However, Soebowo contended that with
\ngovernment subsidies people would be able to undergo such
\noperations at public health centers for as low as Rp 100,000.<\/p>\n
Cataracts commonly occur in people over 50 years old, however,
\nmalnutrition can also cause a clouding of the eye lens, or its
\nsurrounding transparent membrane, which obstructs the passage of
