        "content": "<p>Automotive industry observer and electric vehicle researcher at the\nBandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Yannes Martinus Pasaribu, has\nidentified three main steps that can boost Indonesia\u2019s competitiveness\nin the battery electric vehicle (BEV) industry within the ASEAN region,\nranging from regulatory certainty to strengthening the supply chain\necosystem. \u201cTo make Indonesia\u2019s BEV climate more competitive compared to\nother ASEAN countries, policies need to be directed at three main\nthings, the first being providing long-term regulatory certainty and\nclearer incentives for BEV component manufacturers,\u201d he said when\ncontacted from Jakarta on Tuesday. Yannes explained that clearer\nincentives for BEV component manufacturers are important because, in his\nview, current policies still tend to focus on vehicle assembly and\nconsumer incentives, thus not yet optimally encouraging the\nstrengthening of the component industry. The second step, Yannes\ncontinued, is accelerating the integrated development of the component\nsupply chain ecosystem. This is considered crucial so that Indonesia\ndoes not continue to depend on imports of core components, including\nbatteries, which are the main component of electric vehicles but have\nnot yet been widely produced domestically. \u201cThe problem of batteries as\nthe core component of BEVs not yet being produced in Indonesia is the\nheart of the issue,\u201d said Yannes. Thirdly, he stressed the importance of\npromoting mass production of affordable BEVs within the country. This\nwould create real demand that can sustain the industry and strengthen\nthe position of local component suppliers. Yannes assessed that these\nthree steps are interrelated and form an important foundation for\nbuilding a competitive BEV industry. Without market certainty, an\nintegrated supply chain, and incentives that reach component\nmanufacturers, Indonesia will struggle to accelerate the comprehensive\ndevelopment of the electric vehicle industry. In the context of\nstrengthening the electric vehicle industry, Yannes also highlighted\nthat news of plans to implement EV incentives considering nickel-based\nbattery raw materials will strengthen Indonesia\u2019s position in the\nbattery raw material supply chain. However, according to him, this\nupstream strengthening does not automatically fortify the overall BEV\nindustry ecosystem, which still faces challenges in the component\nsector. He added that this condition becomes increasingly relevant when\ncompared to countries like Vietnam, which already has a more mature BEV\necosystem and is capable of attracting foreign supplier investment, even\nexporting products to various global markets. \u201cVietnam already has a\nmore mature BEV ecosystem and is capable of attracting foreign supplier\ninvestment, even exporting them to various global markets,\u201d he said.
