Expert questions use of multiple choice tests<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A senior education expert is questioning the
\neffectiveness of using multiple choice tests to assess the
\nintelligence and capability of students.<\/p>\n
Makaminan Makagiansar, the head of the National Education
\nAdvisory Board, says multiple choice tests evaluate a student's
\nabilities based on only one answer, when it should be determined
\nby many factors.<\/p>\n
"The proficiency of a student in a certain field of study is a
\ncomplex matter which cannot be determined by one indicator only,"
\nhe said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
"Final tests, such as the Ebtanas, should also contain
\nquestions which test the student's intelligence," he said
\nreferring to the Indonesian term for final examinations in
\nnational primary, junior and senior high schools.<\/p>\n
Most national final examinations are made up of multiple
\nchoice questions. The Ministry of Education and Culture is
\nresponsible for preparing the Ebtanas each year.<\/p>\n
Makaminan admitted that it was difficult to design Ebtanas
\ntest questions that also assess a student's intelligence.
\n"Changing the type of questions is easy but we have yet to figure
\nout what they should be replaced with," he said, adding that the
\nministry lacked experts in the field.<\/p>\n
The entrance tests for coveted seats at top state universities
\nare also dominated by multiple choice questions.<\/p>\n
Makaminan was speaking after accepting the Satyalancana Karya
\nSatya award from Minister of Education and Culture Wardiman
\nDjojonegoro in recognition for his 30 years of service to the
\nministry. Wardiman presented the same awards to Director General
\nfor Informal Education, Youth and Sports Soedijarto and Director
\nfor Sports Sri Sudono Sumarto.<\/p>\n
The minister also inaugurated Saini Kosim as the ministry's
\ndirector of arts to replace retiring Soetopo Cokrohamijoyo. Saini
\nwas previously Director at the Indonesian Academy of Dance Arts
