        "content": "<p>An international relations expert from Padjadjaran University, Teuku\nRezasyah, has assessed that Indonesia holds a strategic position to help\nbreak the deadlock in peace negotiations between the US and Iran, amidst\nglobal scepticism regarding the achievement of such an agreement.\nAccording to Rezasyah, a peace deal is currently difficult to realise\nbecause both the US and Iran are equally unwilling to budge from their\ninitial positions. This situation is worsened by the actions of Israel\u2014a\nUS ally\u2014which continues to launch attacks on Gaza and Lebanon. \u201cEven if\nthe US and Iran approach any sort of agreement, no matter how small,\nIsrael ruins it through various armed actions in Gaza and southern\nLebanon,\u201d Rezasyah said on Thursday. He added that US pressure on Israel\nto soften its stance is often ignored. As far as Israel is concerned,\nDonald Trump is seen as the only US President who can be psychologically\ninfluenced, hence his policies are very pro-Israel. Nevertheless,\nRezasyah sees that an opening for a deal is still possible if there is\nfirmness from the UN Secretary-General, including by assigning\ninternational experts in maritime law and nuclear issues to support\nPakistan\u2019s diplomacy during the negotiations in Islamabad. \u201cIn this way,\nthe US and Iran would be treated with honour, fairly, and measurably, so\nthat both can better appreciate each other\u2019s aspirations,\u201d said the\nAssociate Professor at President University. Amidst the need for\nconsistent international pressure, Rezasyah estimates that Indonesia\ncould take on the role of a peace initiator due to its position, which\nis respected by both the US and Iran. On the other hand, the absence of\nofficial diplomatic relations between Jakarta and Tel Aviv actually\nplaces Indonesia in an honourable position in the eyes of Israel.\nHowever, to optimise this diplomatic bargaining power, Indonesia cannot\nmove alone but must galvanise global solidarity. \u201cIndonesia needs to\nrally global solidarity, primarily with ASEAN, the D-8, the OIC, the\nNon-Aligned Movement, BRICS, the Arab League, MIKTA, and South-South\nCooperation,\u201d he said. As a long-term peace objective, Rezasyah\nsuggested that Indonesia replicate ASEAN\u2019s best experiences in the\nMiddle East, namely by designing a mechanism towards a Zone of Peace,\nFreedom and Neutrality and a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone specifically for\nthat region. Responding to views that Indonesia\u2019s diplomatic voice under\nthe leadership of President Prabowo Subianto and Foreign Minister\nSugiono is currently considered less vocal in responding to global\nissues, Rezasyah stressed the importance of strengthening internal\naffairs first. \u201cTo build international trust in rallying solidarity,\nIndonesia must prove itself capable of managing its domestic situation\nto become more prosperous, stable, honourable, and measured,\u201d said\nRezasyah. \u201cThe success indicators rest on the implementation of the Asta\nCita programme, the progressive achievement of the Sustainable\nDevelopment Goals, the improvement of general welfare, and law-based\ngovernance,\u201d he added.<\/p>",
