        "content": "<p>Expert defends alleged hacker<\/p>\n<p>Urip Hudiono, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>An expert witness testified on Tuesday for defendant Dani<br>\nFirmansyah, saying that the 25-year-old had not violated the<br>\nTelecommunications Law he was being charged with for hacking into<br>\nthe website of the General Elections Commission (KPU) in April.<\/p>\n<p>Information technology expert I Made Wiryana of Gunadarma<br>\nUniversity told the Central Jakarta District Court that Dani's<br>\naccessing the KPU's website database via an ordinary Internet<br>\nbrowser could not be considered as manipulating a<br>\ntelecommunications network.<\/p>\n<p>\"In my opinion, the defendant just wanted to point out the<br>\nflaws in the website's security system... Furthermore, even<br>\nthough the data was changed, there was no permanent damage to it,<br>\nsuch as crashing the website operator's hard drive,\" said<br>\nWiryana, who is also a computer network researcher at Germany's<br>\nBielefeld University.<\/p>\n<p>Dani has been charged under the Telecommunications Law for<br>\nillegally accessing a telecommunications network and\/or service<br>\nand causing a physical or electromagnetic disturbance to a<br>\ntelecommunications service.<\/p>\n<p>The law carries a maximum sentence of six years in prison<br>\nand\/or a fine of Rp 600 million.<\/p>\n<p>Wiryana agreed with judges and prosecutors that the<br>\ndefendant's actions were ethically wrong, but noted that<br>\nIndonesia had no code of conduct for the IT profession as of yet.<\/p>\n<p>Presiding judge Hamdi adjourned the trial until Oct. 19 to<br>\nhear the prosecution's sentence request.<\/p>",
