Expert defends alleged hacker<\/p>\n

An expert witness testified on Tuesday for defendant Dani
\nFirmansyah, saying that the 25-year-old had not violated the
\nTelecommunications Law he was being charged with for hacking into
\nthe website of the General Elections Commission (KPU) in April.<\/p>\n
Information technology expert I Made Wiryana of Gunadarma
\nUniversity told the Central Jakarta District Court that Dani's
\naccessing the KPU's website database via an ordinary Internet
\nbrowser could not be considered as manipulating a
\ntelecommunications network.<\/p>\n
\"In my opinion, the defendant just wanted to point out the
\nflaws in the website's security system... Furthermore, even
\nthough the data was changed, there was no permanent damage to it,
\nsuch as crashing the website operator's hard drive,\" said
\nWiryana, who is also a computer network researcher at Germany's
\nBielefeld University.<\/p>\n
Dani has been charged under the Telecommunications Law for
\nillegally accessing a telecommunications network and\/or service
\nand causing a physical or electromagnetic disturbance to a
\ntelecommunications service.<\/p>\n
The law carries a maximum sentence of six years in prison
\nand\/or a fine of Rp 600 million.<\/p>\n
Wiryana agreed with judges and prosecutors that the
\ndefendant's actions were ethically wrong, but noted that
\nIndonesia had no code of conduct for the IT profession as of yet.<\/p>\n
Presiding judge Hamdi adjourned the trial until Oct. 19 to
\nhear the prosecution's sentence request.<\/p>",
