Expatriates 'returning' to Indonesia<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Many multinational companies which evacuated
\ntheir expatriate employees and dependents during widespread
\nunrest in May have now allowed them to return, a survey has
\nfound.<\/p>\n
The level of fear generated in the expatriate community by the
\nMay riots \"has dramatically subsided\", the Castle Group, which
\nconducted the survey, said in a media release.<\/p>\n
The major consulting firm in Indonesia compiled the survey in
\nthe past seven days.<\/p>\n
Companies were asked whether they were allowing expatriate
\ndependents to live in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Thirty-seven of the 41 respondents responded yes, two
\ncompanies answered in the negative, two were undecided and one
\nstated it would make its decision at the end of the month.<\/p>\n
The majority, 24, of the firms surveyed were American, and the
\nrest were European, Japanese, Australian, Singaporean and
\nIndonesian.<\/p>\n
\"This is a very positive trend,\" said Jeremy Williams who
\ncoordinated the survey. \"We expected a much more mixed picture
\nbecause of anecdotal evidence we've been getting\".<\/p>\n
James Castle, chairman of the Castle Group, said he was
\npleasantly surprised by the results.<\/p>\n
\"We were asked to do the survey by one of our clients who is
\nin the process of making a decision about allowing the dependents
\nof its expatriate employees to return.<\/p>\n
\"Clearly most companies feel that the current climate does not
\nrepresent substantial risk to their employees and their families
\nand that the current level of risk does not justify the trauma of
\nseparating families or pulling expatriates out of the country,\"
