Exit tax scams<\/p>\n

The collection of an exit tax of Rp 500,000, or even Rp 1
\nmillion, from Indonesian citizens wishing to go abroad is
\nprobably abused by corrupt officers. Obviously, this will cause
\nfinancial losses to the state. Secretary of the Tax Directorate
\nGeneral M. Soebakir may be annoyed about rumors of the decline in
\nstate income from the exit tax imposed on passengers going abroad
\nvia Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta airport. Therefore, I propose to the
\ntax directorate general the following measures:<\/p>\n
First, exercise tighter supervision over corrupt officers
\nallegedly involved in exit tax fraud committed by an exit tax
\nmafia. Some legal action may need to be taken against them.<\/p>\n
Second, tax officers should actively conduct the final check
\non passengers' departure documents. Deploying someone from the
\ntax directorate general to check a passenger's exit tax
\nsettlement will reduce the likelihood of losses being incurred by
\nthe state.<\/p>\n
Third, tax directorate general personnel and immigration
\nofficers need to cooperate and understand each other better in
\ndealing with passenger manifests at the airport as both
\ninstitutions' employees are the country's civil servants, whose
\njob it is to serve the public.<\/p>\n
Fourth, immigration officers should not feel that tax
\npersonnel have intervened in their area of duty as it is in the
\ninterests of the nation to boost state income from the tax
\nsector. Therefore, it isn't wrong if the tax directorate general
\nand immigration directorate general issue a joint decree on this
\nmatter.<\/p>\n
