        "content": "<p>Exiled rebels want to return<\/p>\n<p>JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: A number of leaders of a separatist<br>\nmovement in Irian Jaya living in exile in Papua New Guinea have<br>\nwritten to Indonesian authorities asking that they be allowed to<br>\nreturn to their home town.<\/p>\n<p>One is Nico Hipoko, a secretary to the defense minister of the<br>\nFree Papua Movement (OPM), said David Mahulette, an official of<br>\nthe Indonesian consulate office in Vanimo, a town just inside the<br>\nPapua New Guinea border.<\/p>\n<p>Nico in his letter said he joined the rebel forces and fled<br>\nIrian Jaya in 1984. Now he wants to return and resume his studies<br>\nat Cendrawasih University in Jayapura, according to Mahulette.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia will welcome anyone intending to return but<br>\nMahulette said he could not guarantee that the university would<br>\nstill accept Nico.<\/p>\n<p>Mahulette added that the consulate had received similar<br>\nletters from numerous Irianese living in exile in Papua New<br>\nGuinea.
