Exhibition on vocational training<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): An exhibition opens today highlighting the
\nbenefits of vocational training programs to both the education
\nand business worlds.<\/p>\n
The four-day Gebyar SMK expo at the Jakarta Fair Ground in
\nKemayoran is jointly organized by the Ministry of Education and
\nCulture and the Jakarta chapter of the Indonesian Chamber of
\nCommerce and Industry (Kadin Jaya).<\/p>\n
Participants include vocational senior high schools, private
\ncompanies and government institutions.<\/p>\n
The government launched a \"dual program\" for vocational
\nschools four years ago in which companies are encouraged to take
\non vocational school students for internships.<\/p>\n
Kadin Jaya chairman Rainal Rais said only 319 of 2,500 chapter
\nmembers had enlisted in the program so far.<\/p>\n
He said the absorption rate of vocational school graduates was
\nlow because there were problems with their skills.<\/p>\n
\"The philosophy in business is still to make profit,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The dual program has not been entirely wasted however.<\/p>\n
Twenty-five percent of the 63,500 students who graduated from
\nvocational high schools in Jakarta last year went straight into
\njobs, according to the Jakarta office of the Ministry of
\nEducation and Culture.<\/p>\n
Rainal said Kadin could not compel its members to join the
