Executives in Asia support Nobel award<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A majority of Asian executives polled recently
\nsaid the Nobel committee was justified in awarding this year's
\npeace prize to East Timor Bishop Carlos Felipe Ximenes Belo and
\nseparatist leader Jose Ramos Horta.<\/p>\n
In the latest Asian executives poll conducted by Far Eastern
\nEconomic Review and Asia Business News, 75.3 percent of
\nrespondents believed the award was deserved.<\/p>\n
In sharp contrast, 58.3 percent of the poll's respondents
\nof Indonesian nationality disagreed with the committee's decision
\nto award the prize to Belo and Horta.<\/p>\n
To the chagrin Jakarta officials the Nobel peace prize was
\nawarded last month to Belo, a vocal critic of government policies
\nin East Timor, and Horta who leads a small separatist movement
\nfor Timorese independence.<\/p>\n
The poll also asked whether Japan and the European Union were
\njustified in taking Indonesia to the World Trade Organization
\n(WTO) over the Timor \"national car\" project.<\/p>\n
A whopping 70.6 percent said \"yes\".<\/p>\n
However 71.4 percent of respondents in South Korea, where the
\ncar is being made, and 57.1 percent in the Philippines say the
\nmove is unjustified.<\/p>\n
Oddly enough a majority of Indonesians supported the idea of
\ntaking the issue to the WTO. More than 60 percent of the
\nIndonesian respondents said Japan and the European Union were
\njustified in their move.<\/p>\n
The weekly fax poll solicits responses from corporate
\nexecutives in 10 Asian countries. (mds)<\/p>",
