        "content": "<p>Excessive zealotry<\/p>\n<p>The campaign for the general election is due to begin in about<br>\na month's time. Some, though, have already made a running start<br>\nto this part of the intoxicating feast of democracy.<\/p>\n<p>Occasionally there has been displays of excessive zealotry.<br>\nThe unrest that shook Pekalongan during the past week, for<br>\nexample, was an example of how some of the contesting parties<br>\nhave been overly enthusiastic to inject some excitement into this<br>\npart of the lead-up of to the election campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Without naming offenders, this overzealotry has created some<br>\nundesirable side effects. For many, ensuring victory for a<br>\nparticular contestant has become more important than fairness,<br>\nplaying by the rules and maintaining peace and security in the<br>\ncommunity.<\/p>\n<p>We hope that there will be no more disturbances such as that<br>\nin Pekalongan. With luck, the three contestants and the<br>\ngovernment will be able to draw lessons from the Pekalongan<br>\nincident.  Apart from playing by the rules, those managing the<br>\ncampaign should consider community psychology and sociology.<\/p>\n<p>We agree with the Coordinating Minister for Political Affairs<br>\nand Security, Soesilo Soedarman, who remarked that the Pekalongan<br>\nupheavals should lead to greater introspection.<\/p>\n<p>Have we been taking the right steps so far? Golkar, whose<br>\nvictory is a foregone conclusion, should avoid stumbling over<br>\ntrivial incidents.<\/p>\n<p>All parties must remember that the staging of general<br>\nelections are part of our efforts to establish democracy. But we<br>\ndo not want democracy to be established on the basis of blood and<br>\narson. The success of the general election is measured not by<br>\nwhich contestant emerges the winner, but by the opportunity for<br>\nevery contestant to attain the best possible result in a spirit<br>\nof fairness while observing all the rules of the game.<\/p>\n<p>-- Media Indonesia, Jakarta<\/p>",
