Excelcomido installs 17-km microcell network<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Private global system for mobile communications
\n(GSM) operator PT Excelcomindo Pratama has installed a 17-
\nkilometer microcell network in the capital's golden triangle area
\nto improve its coverage in the city's most active business
\ndistrict.<\/p>\n
Rudiantara, an Excelcomindo executive, said here yesterday the
\nproject was the largest microcell network ever installed by any
\ncellular operator.<\/p>\n
\"This is the first time 27 microcells have been installed in a
\ncontinuous network,\" he said, adding the service had started
\nafter a trial operation in July.<\/p>\n
He said the US$5 million project was necessary to improve
\nExcelcomindo's coverage in the golden triangle, the capital's
\nmajor business district frequently affected by traffic jams.<\/p>\n
Rudiantara said his company was supplied by Ericsson to
\ninstall the microcell network. \"Ericsson is the most popular in
\nthe network system.\"<\/p>\n
Danny Buldansyah, also an Excelcomindo executive, said the
\nmicrocells were installed within the golden triangle area which
\nspans from the Hotel Indonesia circle on Jl. Thamrin to Jl.
\nSudirman, Jl. Senopati and Jl. Tendean.<\/p>\n
\"It's natural people make more calls when they are trapped in
\ntraffic jams during peak hours. The microcell network avoids
\nuncompleted calls.\"<\/p>\n
He said that one microcell was installed within a 500 meter to
\none kilometer range.<\/p>\n
\"With the microcell network, channel capacity in the golden
\ntriangle will be three to four times stronger,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Excelcomindo, which serves 107,000 customers, will expand its
\nservice to other areas in Indonesia as part of its plan to go
\nnationwide.<\/p>\n
Excelcomindo, which goes by the GSM-XL brand, is one of three
\noperators of the global system for mobile communications (GSM) in
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
Matt Olsson of Ericsson said Excelcomindo's microcell network
\nwas the longest seamless project.<\/p>\n
\"We did similar projects in other countries like in Singapore,
\nbut this is the longest one installed in the business district.\"<\/p>\n
Ericsson's executive Stefan Funke said the GSM network
\nconsists of a Mobile Switching Center and Base Station Controller
\n(BSC). BSC is supported by three kinds of Base Transceiver
\nStations known as the macrocell, microcell and picocell. (icn)<\/p>",
