Exam sneak preview sparks investigation<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Ministry of National Education confirmed
\nhere on Friday that makeups may have to be held by several
\nstudents in Jakarta and West Java following the discovery of
\npossible leaks in the just completed national high school final
\nexaminations (Ebtanas).<\/p>\n
Those who would have to take the makeup would do so on June 5.<\/p>\n
Director General of Elementary and Secondary Education Indra
\nDjati Sidi said police would work with a special team under the
\ndirectorate general to weed out the source of the leaked exams.<\/p>\n
"This is a criminal case because it involves the state's
\nconfidential documents," Indra told reporters.<\/p>\n
All students from Elementary, Junior High, and High Schools
\nthroughout the country are required to pass an end-of-term
\nnational evaluation test in order to continue to a higher level
\nof education.<\/p>\n
The three-day examination for high schools students was held
\nstarting May 22.<\/p>\n
Indra said students from some high schools in Jakarta and West
\nJava were reported to have the question and answer sheets of the
\nexamination days before it was due to be held.<\/p>\n
He said several students have admitted to buying the sheets
\nfrom strangers.<\/p>\n
According to Indra leaks in West Jakarta were found at SMU
\nNegeri 2 (State High School), SMU Negeri 55 Durentiga, SMU Negeri
\n19, SMU Negeri 38, and SMU Negeri 101.<\/p>\n
Leaks were also found at SMU Negeri 71 and SMU Negeri 100 in
\nEast Jakarta, Sumbangsih private high school and Al Azhar Islamic
\nhigh school in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
In West Java, leaks were found at least in four high school in
\nSMU Negeri 2, SMU Negeri 4, SMU Negeri 5, and SMU Negeri 7 in
\nTangerang.<\/p>\n
Ministry officials were still awaiting reports of leaks found
\nin other provinces.<\/p>\n
Indra said full effort had been made to secure the examination
\ntranscripts. "The printing and the delivery of the transcripts
\nwere secured by security personnel."<\/p>\n
He added that the ministry was tracing the flow of the
\nexamination transcripts from the time they were drafted to their
\ndelivery to regional offices.<\/p>\n
Separately, the head of the Jakarta office of the Ministry of
\nNational Education Alwi Nurdin said makeup examinations would be
\nheld from June 5 to June 8, along with the one for students who
\nfailed to show up for the initial examination.<\/p>\n
"Students who should repeat the examination are those who are
\nimplicated in making use of the leaked test data.<\/p>\n
"Those whose exam results are far higher compared to their
\ndaily scores are suspected," he told The Jakarta Post by phone.<\/p>\n
He said that headmasters of the schools whose students were
\nimplicated in the wrongdoing will be involved in determining
\nwhether the students should take the makeups.<\/p>\n
Alwi said the leaked test copies were not from Jakarta, which
\nhas different test copies than other provinces.<\/p>\n
"Those circulated in Jakarta have the exam directions printed
\nby computer, while the exam directions in the leaked copies were
\nmanually printed.<\/p>\n
"So, the leaked ones must have been from out of town," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Separately, chairman of the Jakarta Examination Committee,
\nSulaeman Hariadi, said that the Jakarta office of the National
\nEducation Ministry filed a report with city police headquarters
\non Friday over the alleged use of unauthorized test copies.<\/p>\n
In anticipation of repeated occurrences of leaks during the
\nnational examination for junior high schools from June 5 to June
\n7, the Jakarta office of the National Education Ministry will
\nconduct tighter supervision of the students, Sulaeman said.<\/p>\n
"We'll conduct body searches of the students," he said,
\nexplaining that female students will be searched by female
\nteachers only.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, teachers of the schools where leaks were found
\ndenied the possibility of teachers' involvement in the
\nwrongdoing.<\/p>\n
"The room where the test copies were stored was locked.
\nMoreover, there were two officers from the Tamansari police
\nsubprecinct (in West Jakarta) guarding the school during the
\nexam," said Hari, a teacher of SMUN 2 who was also responsible in
\nguarding the test copies.<\/p>\n
However, another SMUN 2 teacher Saragih admitted that one of
\nsome 450 students of the school joining the examination was found
\nkeeping a leaked test copy on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Saragih said he hoped that the authorities would soon disclose
\nthe result of their investigation, "so that teachers will not
