        "content": "<p>Exam sneak preview sparks investigation<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Ministry of National Education confirmed<br>\nhere on Friday that makeups may have to be held by several<br>\nstudents in Jakarta and West Java following the discovery of<br>\npossible leaks in the just completed national high school final<br>\nexaminations (Ebtanas).<\/p>\n<p>Those who would have to take the makeup would do so on June 5.<\/p>\n<p>Director General of Elementary and Secondary Education Indra<br>\nDjati Sidi said police would work with a special team under the<br>\ndirectorate general to weed out the source of the leaked exams.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;This is a criminal case because it involves the state&apos;s<br>\nconfidential documents,&quot; Indra told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>All students from Elementary, Junior High, and High Schools<br>\nthroughout the country are required to pass an end-of-term<br>\nnational evaluation test in order to continue to a higher level<br>\nof education.<\/p>\n<p>The three-day examination for high schools students was held<br>\nstarting May 22.<\/p>\n<p>Indra said students from some high schools in Jakarta and West<br>\nJava were reported to have the question and answer sheets of the<br>\nexamination days before it was due to be held.<\/p>\n<p>He said several students have admitted to buying the sheets<br>\nfrom strangers.<\/p>\n<p>According to Indra leaks in West Jakarta were found at SMU<br>\nNegeri 2 (State High School), SMU Negeri 55 Durentiga, SMU Negeri<br>\n19, SMU Negeri 38, and SMU Negeri 101.<\/p>\n<p>Leaks were also found at SMU Negeri 71 and SMU Negeri 100 in<br>\nEast Jakarta, Sumbangsih private high school and Al Azhar Islamic<br>\nhigh school in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>In West Java, leaks were found at least in four high school in<br>\nSMU Negeri 2, SMU Negeri 4, SMU Negeri 5, and SMU Negeri 7 in<br>\nTangerang.<\/p>\n<p>Ministry officials were still awaiting reports of leaks found<br>\nin other provinces.<\/p>\n<p>Indra said full effort had been made to secure the examination<br>\ntranscripts. &quot;The printing and the delivery of the transcripts<br>\nwere secured by security personnel.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He added that the ministry was tracing the flow of the<br>\nexamination transcripts from the time they were drafted to their<br>\ndelivery to regional offices.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, the head of the Jakarta office of the Ministry of<br>\nNational Education Alwi Nurdin said makeup examinations would be<br>\nheld from June 5 to June 8, along with the one for students who<br>\nfailed to show up for the initial examination.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Students who should repeat the examination are those who are<br>\nimplicated in making use of the leaked test data.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Those whose exam results are far higher compared to their<br>\ndaily scores are suspected,&quot; he told The Jakarta Post by phone.<\/p>\n<p>He said that headmasters of the schools whose students were<br>\nimplicated in the wrongdoing will be involved in determining<br>\nwhether the students should take the makeups.<\/p>\n<p>Alwi said the leaked test copies were not from Jakarta, which<br>\nhas different test copies than other provinces.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Those circulated in Jakarta have the exam directions printed<br>\nby computer, while the exam directions in the leaked copies were<br>\nmanually printed.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;So, the leaked ones must have been from out of town,&quot; he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, chairman of the Jakarta Examination Committee,<br>\nSulaeman Hariadi, said that the Jakarta office of the National<br>\nEducation Ministry filed a report with city police headquarters<br>\non Friday over the alleged use of unauthorized test copies.<\/p>\n<p>In anticipation of repeated occurrences of leaks during the<br>\nnational examination for junior high schools from June 5 to June<br>\n7, the Jakarta office of the National Education Ministry will<br>\nconduct tighter supervision of the students, Sulaeman said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We&apos;ll conduct body searches of the students,&quot; he said,<br>\nexplaining that female students will be searched by female<br>\nteachers only.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, teachers of the schools where leaks were found<br>\ndenied the possibility of teachers&apos; involvement in the<br>\nwrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The room where the test copies were stored was locked.<br>\nMoreover, there were two officers from the Tamansari police<br>\nsubprecinct (in West Jakarta) guarding the school during the<br>\nexam,&quot; said Hari, a teacher of SMUN 2 who was also responsible in<br>\nguarding the test copies.<\/p>\n<p>However, another SMUN 2 teacher Saragih admitted that one of<br>\nsome 450 students of the school joining the examination was found<br>\nkeeping a leaked test copy on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Saragih said he hoped that the authorities would soon disclose<br>\nthe result of their investigation, &quot;so that teachers will not<br>\nfeel uneasy about being suspected&quot;.
