Ex-VP to give aid to 32 children<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Addressing a Golkar campaign rally Sunday, former
\nvice president Sudharmono said he was moved by the hardship in
\nCentral Jakarta's Karet Tengsin slum area.<\/p>\n
He promised to provide educational assistance to 32 children
\nfrom impoverished families that cannot afford to attend school.<\/p>\n
The former Golkar chief said the money would come from his
\nprivate foundation and his "own pocket", Antara reported.<\/p>\n
Sudharmono made the announcement after hearing accounts of the
\nincreasing hardship people have been facing in the subdistrict.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of homes in the area were destroyed by fire last
\nyear, while other residents have been evicted to make way for
\ndevelopment projects.<\/p>\n
"We have been increasingly 'squeezed' by skyscrapers. We are
\nmere spectators of the rapid development," a resident said. "Will
\nGolkar help us?"<\/p>\n
Golkar chairman Harmoko warned supporters last week against
\nmaking empty promises during the election campaign. (pan)<\/p>",
