        "content": "<p>Ex-Thai premier to quit leadership<\/p>\n<p>BANGKOK (Reuters): Former Thai premier Chavalit Yongchaiyudh<br>\nwill give up next month the leadership of the New Aspiration<br>\nParty (NAP) he founded, and may retire from politics in the near<br>\nfuture, party officials said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\"General Chavalit said he will resign from the position of<br>\nparty leader on December 22. He is not willing to be reinstated<br>\nbecause he wants to see the party lead by the younger<br>\ngeneration,\" NAP spokesman Kuthep Saikrajang announced.<\/p>\n<p>Chavalit resigned as premier on Nov. 7 under pressure from the<br>\npublic, businesspeople and his coalition partners after Thailand<br>\nplunged into its worst economic crisis in decades.<\/p>\n<p>Another senior NAP source said Chavalit's resignation as party<br>\nleader could be regarded as the first step in his total<br>\nretirement from politics.<\/p>",
