Ex-regent grilled for six hours<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: Former Bantul regent Col. Sri Roso Sudarmo was
\ngrilled for more than six hours by the military police here
\nyesterday over allegations that he tried to bribe a Soeharto-
\nlinked foundation with Rp 1 billion (US$68,000) to get
\nreappointed as regent.<\/p>\n
The former regent, who was mobbed by waiting reporters after
\nthe questioning, refused to comment on his questioning.<\/p>\n
The head of the Military Police investigating team, Lt. Col.
\nUnggul K. Yudoyono, who was interviewed later, also refused to
\nreveal much about the interrogation.<\/p>\n
\"Many questions were asked,\" he said, adding that only the
\nCentral Java Military Police chief in Semarang could give
\nmaterial details of the interrogation.<\/p>\n
Sri Roso was grilled as a suspect for in 1996 allegedly
\nagreeing to give a \"donation\" to the Dharmais Foundation chaired
\nby former president Soeharto if he could retain his post.<\/p>\n
Sri Roso may also be questioned over the unsolved murder of
\nBernas daily journalist Fuad Muhammad Syafruddin, alias Udin, in
\n1996.<\/p>\n
Many people believe the journalist's death was probably tied
\nto corruption reports he was investigating in Bantul.<\/p>\n
The head of the Yogyakarta police detectives, Lt. Col. Erwin
\nTobing, said yesterday that 27 people had been interrogated in
\nthe new probe into Udin's murder. (23\/44)<\/p>",
