Ex-POW elected envoy to Vietnam<\/p>\n
WASHINGTON (Reuter): The former prisoner of war nominated to
\nbe the first U.S. ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam
\nvowed on Thursday to help foster trade, promote stability in
\nSoutheast Asia and try to bind old war wounds.<\/p>\n
The nominee, former Representative Douglas \"Pete\" Peterson, a
\nFlorida Democrat, said that if confirmed as expected he hoped to
\n\"play a critical and constructive role in helping our nation mend
\nfurther\" from the war that ended with a communist victory in
\n1975.<\/p>\n
He said a U.S. ambassadorial presence in Hanoi \"can help
\nensure regional stability in Southeast Asia and we will
\nundoubtedly discover new economic opportunities for American
\nbusinesses where few previously existed.\"<\/p>\n
Fallout from the war and the deep divisions it sowed in U.S
\nsociety swirled through Peterson's remarks, made at the start of
\nhis long-delayed confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign
\nRelations Committee.<\/p>",
