Ex-minister launches memoirs<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Commemorating his 50th wedding anniversary, Oei
\nTjoe Tat, a former minister under Indonesia's first president
\nSukarno, launched his book of memoirs depicting his governmental
\nservice and his 11-year prison term under the New Order
\ngovernment on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n
The 410-page book entitled Memoar Oei Tjoe Tat Pembantu
\nPresiden Soekarno (Memoirs of Oei Tjoe Tat, Assistant to
\nPresident Sukarno), tells of the struggle of an Indonesian of
\nChinese origin for his nation, with his final ascent to a
\nministerial post.<\/p>\n
Oei, who served as state minister under former president
\nSukarno, was one of the few ministers arrested in 1966 following
\nthe transfer of power from Sukarno to incumbent President
\nSoeharto, who was then an army lieutenant general in charge of
\nrestoring order and stability in the wake of the communist
\nabortive coup a year earlier.<\/p>\n
Oei was released in December 1977.<\/p>\n
Among the more than 600 guests attending the party and book
\nlaunching ceremony at Bara Widya Sasana in Kebayoran Baru, South
\nJakarta, were Megawati Soekarnoputri, chairperson of the
\nIndonesian Democratic Party, former Jakarta governor Ali Sadikin,
\nnovelist Pramoedya Ananta Toer, essayist Goenawan Mohamad,
\nhistorian Onghokham, and human rights activist H. Princen. (ego)<\/p>",
