Ex-governors, sociologist get transmigration award<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Former governors of Irian Jaya and Aceh and a
\nnoted sociologist were awarded by the government yesterday with
\nthe Satya Lencana Pembangunan stars for their contribution to the
\ngovernment transmigration cause.<\/p>\n
Ibrahim Hasan, the current state minister for food who served
\nas Aceh governor in 1986-1993, and Izaac Hindom, Irian Jaya
\ngovernor between 1983 and 1988, and sociologist Selo Soemardjan
\neach received the award from Minister of Transmigration Siswono
\nYudohusodo on behalf of President Soeharto.<\/p>\n
Irian Jaya has been a major destination for the government's
\nprogram to resettle people from overcrowded Java and Bali to the
\nlesser populated regions.<\/p>\n
The transmigration program in both Aceh and Irian Jaya has
\nbeen particularly challenging given the strong opposition in its
\ninitial stages and also the difficult terrain and conditions,
\nincluding the presence of ongoing separatist wars.<\/p>\n
Siswono said Ibrahim during his tenure as Aceh governor
\nprovided many facilities to help improve the welfare of
\ntransmigrants in the province.<\/p>\n
"Aceh under his coordination succeeded in protecting thousands
\nof transmigrants and their families from the ferocity of the
\nseparatist rebel group in the province," he said, recalling that
\nsome transmigrants and officials were killed in various raids.<\/p>\n
Izaac, who is now a member of the Supreme Advisory Council,
\nhelped intensify the transmigration program during his tenure, by
\nproviding new settlement areas and developing the needed
\ninfrastructure, Siswono said.<\/p>\n
"The success of the transmigration program in Irian Jaya was
\nachieved because of close cooperation with the local
\nadministration," he said.<\/p>\n
Selo was awarded for his contribution in designing the
\ntransmigration program, according to Siswono.<\/p>\n
As a sociologist, he contributed many of his thoughts in
\ndesigning and carrying out the program, the minister said.<\/p>\n
Selo has been active in promoting transmigration as far back
\nas the 1950s, by encouraging people to resettle outside of Java
\nwhen he served as district head in Yogyakarta. (rms)<\/p>",
