Ex-communists active again<\/p>\n
PURWOKERTO, Central Java: The Armed Forces (ABRI) says that a
\nnumber of people arrested here for attempting to establish an
\nIslamic state are former communists.<\/p>\n
Chief for ABRI General Affairs department Let. Gen. Soeyono
\ntold The Jakarta Post yesterday that an \"extremist movement\" had
\nbeen spreading in the towns of Banyumas, Purwokerto, Tegal,
\nPekalongan, Boyolali, Kartasura and Karanganyar as well as
\nYogyakarta.<\/p>\n
Soeyono also said that he was informed about the activities
\nlast year while he was still chief of the regional military
\ncommand.<\/p>\n
\"(The incumbent) military commander Maj. Gen. Yusuf
\nKartanegara has succeeded in containing the extremist movement,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Soeyono explained that documents found in the possession of
\nthe alleged secessionists showed that they planned to set up a
\nso-called Indonesian Islamic State (NII) which was to cover
\nCentral Java and Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n
Soeyono said the movement usually targeted people whose \"faith
\nis still weak\" and could be influenced easily. Around 200
\nvillagers of Karangendep, Patikraja sub-district, Banyumas, have
\nreportedly \"disappeared\" since becoming disciples of one of the
