Evicted people stage protest<\/p>\n

At least 500 people who were evicted from slums along the West
\nFlood Canal in Penjaringan, North Jakarta, joined a peaceful
\nrally on Wednesday to protest the forced evictions.<\/p>\n
The protest started at 11 a.m. in front of the State Palace,
\nwith speeches being delivered demanding the President use her
\nauthority to stop the evictions. The rally continued at the Hotel
\nIndonesia traffic circle, where the protesters sat on the ground
\nunder the spray of the fountain before continuing their protest
\nat the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n
Many of the protesters were women and children who came to the
\nlocation in five Metromini buses.<\/p>\n
The victims were assisted by the non-governmental
\norganizations grouped in the Anti-eviction Network.<\/p>\n
They demanded that the issue of forced evictions be addressed
\nnationally and urged the government and the legislators to seek
\nsolutions to their problems by relocating the victims and
\nproviding them with proper places to live.<\/p>\n
On Monday, the city administration evicted at least 2,000
\npeople from the slums along the West Flood Canal. Yet, they
\nrefused to leave and even rebuilt temporary sanctuary from the
\ndebris of their houses.<\/p>\n
Emon, one of the victims, told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday
\nthat they would remain living on the location despite the threat
\nof another eviction.<\/p>",
