In the run-up to the special session of the People's
\nConsultative Assembly, who will be the vice presidential
\ncandidates has become a hot topic of discussion, particularly
\namong legislators. That people find this matter of great interest
\nis quite natural in view of the following:
\n 1. President Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid's administration has
\nfailed to implement something very significant to the people, to
\nborrow from Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Worse still, many policies
\nissued by the President have deviated from the reform movement
\noutlined by the students.
\n 2. Gus Dur has failed to eradicate corruption, collusion and
\nnepotism, one of the items on the reform agenda. With Gus Dur as
\nPresident corruption, collusion and nepotism have, instead, found
\nfertile ground, as evidenced by the uncovering of corruption,
\ncollusion and nepotism cases such as the BLBI case, the Bulog
\ncase, the Brunei case, etc. It is quite a strange coincidence
\nthat Gus Dur has been implicated in all these cases. Who knows,
\nmaybe there will be another case uncovered later related to his
\nofficial trips abroad. Reportedly he has spent huge amounts of
\nmoney traveling overseas.
\n 3. The upcoming special session of the Assembly has agreed to
\nseek the accountability of the President. If Gus Dur is
\nimpeached, automatically and constitutionally Vice President
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri will take over as president, therefore
\nleaving the vice presidential seat vacant.<\/p>\n
As a layman, I believe that this vacant vice presidential seat
\nwill become a bone of contention among the factions in the
\nAssembly. It is likely that there will be a ruling excluding
\npeople who are not from political parties from taking part in the
\nvice presidential race. In this context, it must be borne in mind
\nthat the 1945 Constitution stipulates that all Indonesian
\ncitizens who have fulfilled certain requirements have the same
\nrights when it comes to being nominated for vice president.<\/p>\n
It is advisable, therefore, that the Assembly and the House of
\nRepresentatives allow nonparty men and women to be nominated for
\nvice president, otherwise it will run counter to the spirit of
\ndemocracy in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Ordinary people will accept anyone who becomes vice president
\nas long as there is good cooperation between the president and
\nthe vice president in implementing reform and finding a solution
\nto the protracted crisis.<\/p>\n
To ensure that Megawati's administration is solid, she must
\nhave a good deputy. Therefore all Indonesian citizens, including
\nactive and retired military personnel, should be allowed to be
\nnominated as vice presidential candidates.<\/p>\n
