Evans visits 'Tempo' exhibition<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Gareth Evans
\nattended an exhibition of old Tempo magazine covers and the
\nlaunching of Sidelines, a book of selected essays by its former
\nchief editor, last Sunday evening.<\/p>\n
"Evans only paid a short visit here, about ten minutes," said
\nGoenawan Mohamad, former chief editor of the now defunct Tempo
\nmagazine. At the opening of the exhibition, Evans was accompanied
\nby Australian ambassador to Indonesia, Allan Taylor.<\/p>\n
Goenawan said the minister expressed his deep sympathy for the
\nclosure of his magazine by the government. Evans asked about
\nTempo's last front cover, which caused the revocation of their
\npublishing license, he said.<\/p>\n
"The front cover design is good," Goenawan quoted Evans as
\nsaying.<\/p>\n
He said Evans also asked about the possibility of acquiring of
\na new publishing license for Opini magazine, applied for by some
\nof Tempo's former employees.<\/p>\n
"I told him that I am no longer involved with Tempo's former
\nemployees," Goenawan said to the Antara news agency.<\/p>\n
However, he told Evans that Director General of Press and
\nGraphics Subrata had informed him that the government will not be
\nissuing a new license.<\/p>\n
Goenawan also handed an English version of his collection of
\nessays, entitled Sidelines, to the minister.<\/p>\n
Tempo lost its license in June along with the news weekly
\nmagazine Editor and the weekly DeTik tabloid. Tempo was punished
\nfor certain aspects of its editorial content, although the
\ngovernment never specifically mentioned the articles that were
\ndeemed to be offensive. Editor and DeTik were closed for
\nadministrative reasons.<\/p>\n
Employees of Tempo magazine have been trying to obtain a new
\nlicense since the government revoked its permit.<\/p>\n
A group of former employees from the defunct Tempo weekly
\nrecently accepted timber tycoon Muhammad (Bob) Hasan as its major
\ninvestor in the newly-founded magazine Gatra. They announced on
\nOct. 20 that they had obtained a publishing license for their new
\nweekly magazine and it is scheduled to hit the streets today.<\/p>\n
Those who refused to join the Gatra management tried to start
\ntheir own weekly Opini, of which copies of the trial edition were
\ncirculated in mid-October.<\/p>\n
However, the Association of Newspaper Publishers, which issues
\nrecommendations for new publications, asked its managers to
\nrename the magazine as another publication already carries the
\nsame name. They have since renamed the magazine and now call it
