Evans supports growth triangle<\/p>\n
PENANG, Malaysia (AFP): Australian Foreign Minister Gareth
\nEvans Saturday voiced support for a growth triangle linking
\nIndonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, saying he expected Canberra's
\nprivate sector to participate actively in the area.<\/p>\n
\"We believe the triangle would attract new commercial and
\ntrade investment from Australia and such regional cooperation
\nwould open new investment activities,\" Evans told reporters.<\/p>\n
The Australian minister, who is on a four-day visit to
\nMalaysia, was speaking at the northern resort island of Penang,
\nwhere he was making a day's stopover to view local businesses.<\/p>\n
Penang, one of Malaysia's main industrial states, is in the
\nheart of the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle,
\nlaunched in July 1993 to enhance business ties among the three
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
Malaysia's economic adviser to the government Daim Zainuddin
\nsaid last year Australia had applied to become the fourth
\npartner in the growth triangle but the request could not be met
\nas the country was geographically alienated from the area.<\/p>\n
Evans, however, said he viewed Penang as a dynamic part of
\nMalaysia and that Australians could participate in the growth
\ntriangle by investing in the state.<\/p>\n
Evans leaves for Bangkok today for a brief stopover before
\nflying home.<\/p>",
