European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed that\nCanada become the bloc\u2019s first associate member. This strategic move was\nannounced on Wednesday (16\/9) local time as an effort to strengthen the\neconomies of both parties amidst increasing trade tensions with the\nUnited States.<\/p>\n
Currently, Canada is caught in a trade dispute with the US, its\nlargest trading partner. This situation adds urgency for Ottawa to move\ncloser to the European Union (EU). On the other asides, US President\nDonald Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of Canada becoming the 51st\nUS state. This notion has been flatly rejected by Canadian Prime\nMinister Mark Carney.<\/p>\n
Carney attended as a guest during von der Leyen\u2019s state speech in\nStrasbourg, France. In her address, von der Leyen emphasised the\nimportance of restructuring global partnerships for the sake of\ndemocratic resilience. \u201cIn short, we want to take the relationship with\nCanada to the highest possible level,\u201d she asserted.<\/p>\n
Although von der Leyen stated that this cooperation is not aimed at\nopposing any particular party, President Donald Trump has responded\nharshly. Trump threatened to impose heavy tariffs on the European Union\nif they allow Canada to become an associate member, which he considers a\nhostile act.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf the intention is good, it is no problem. If the intention is bad,\nwe will impose very heavy tariffs on Europe,\u201d Trump told reporters.<\/p>\n
Culturally and politically, Canada shares deep similarities with the\nEuropean model, ranging from parliamentary democratic systems to\nuniversal healthcare. Canada even shares a small land border with Europe\nvia Hans Island (a Danish territory) off the coast of Greenland.<\/p>\n
However, the primary obstacle is geographical, as Canada is not\nlocated on the European continent. According to EU accession rules,\ncandidate countries must be located in Europe and receive unanimous\napproval from the 27 member states. Currently, the formal status of\n\u2018associate member\u2019 does not yet exist within the EU\u2019s legal structure,\nmeaning this alliance is predicted to be a unique and unprecedented form\nof partnership.<\/p>\n

A recent survey from Abacus Data shows that approximately 80% of\nCanadians support strengthening cooperation with the EU. Furthermore,\n56% of respondents feel that Canada shares more similarities with\nEuropean nations than with the United States.<\/p>\n
However, Prime Minister Mark Carney\u2019s move has faced sharp criticism\nfrom domestic opposition. Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre\ndescribed the effort as unrealistic.
