        "content": "<p>EUROCHAM vows to boost business cooperation<\/p>\n<p>Tony Hotland, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>The newly established European Business Chamber of Commerce<br>\n(EUROCHAM) in Indonesia plans to set up sectoral working groups<br>\nin cooperation with the Indonesian business community to promote<br>\ninvestment in various parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Chamber chairman Jean-Francois Fischaux said on Monday that<br>\nthe pharmaceutical, finance, transportation, trade and<br>\ndistribution sectors would likely be priorities.<\/p>\n<p>\"It's only the beginning, considering that those sectors are<br>\nthe main core businesses of most of the chamber's founding<br>\ncompanies. We expect, of course, that we'll have more sectors and<br>\nworking groups,\" he said in a press conference after being<br>\nelected by directors from 30 founding companies and business<br>\nassociations.<\/p>\n<p>EUROCHAM claims that it will endeavor to improve access for<br>\nEuropean businesses to the Indonesian market to stimulate<br>\ninvestment as well as to promote a strong European business<br>\nidentity with the Indonesian authorities and business community<br>\nand to foster business relationships between the two communities.<\/p>\n<p>Launched on May 11, EUROCHAM in Indonesia is an association to<br>\nrepresent the views of the business communities of the member<br>\nstates of the European Union in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Initiating parties of the chamber include PT Siemens<br>\nIndonesia, PT Bayer Indonesia, and PT BASF Indonesia from<br>\nGermany; PT Carrefour Indonesia, PT L'oreal Indonesia and<br>\ninvestment bank BNP Paribas from France; UK's<br>\nPriceWaterhouseCoopers and the Italian Business Association.<\/p>\n<p>The parties elected on Monday an eight-member executive board<br>\nwhose term will run until the end of 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from drafting an annual program, the board is also to<br>\nform a consultative board to provide overall guidance and review<br>\nthe annual program of EUROCHAM.<\/p>\n<p>\"We'll also make constant contacts and develop cooperation<br>\nwith the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry,\" said<br>\nFischaux.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about conditions in Indonesia that deter foreign<br>\ninvestors, Fischaux listed the unstable macroeconomic condition,<br>\nthe slow progress in banking reformation, and the lack of access<br>\nfor development.<\/p>\n<p>\"There are many potential locations in a country as big as<br>\nIndonesia. The government must strive for total development, not<br>\nonly in big cities like Jakarta,\" he said.<\/p>",
