EUROCHAM vows to boost business cooperation<\/p>\n

The newly established European Business Chamber of Commerce
\n(EUROCHAM) in Indonesia plans to set up sectoral working groups
\nin cooperation with the Indonesian business community to promote
\ninvestment in various parts of the country.<\/p>\n
Chamber chairman Jean-Francois Fischaux said on Monday that
\nthe pharmaceutical, finance, transportation, trade and
\ndistribution sectors would likely be priorities.<\/p>\n
\"It's only the beginning, considering that those sectors are
\nthe main core businesses of most of the chamber's founding
\ncompanies. We expect, of course, that we'll have more sectors and
\nworking groups,\" he said in a press conference after being
\nelected by directors from 30 founding companies and business
\nassociations.<\/p>\n
EUROCHAM claims that it will endeavor to improve access for
\nEuropean businesses to the Indonesian market to stimulate
\ninvestment as well as to promote a strong European business
\nidentity with the Indonesian authorities and business community
\nand to foster business relationships between the two communities.<\/p>\n
Launched on May 11, EUROCHAM in Indonesia is an association to
\nrepresent the views of the business communities of the member
\nstates of the European Union in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Initiating parties of the chamber include PT Siemens
\nIndonesia, PT Bayer Indonesia, and PT BASF Indonesia from
\nGermany; PT Carrefour Indonesia, PT L'oreal Indonesia and
\ninvestment bank BNP Paribas from France; UK's
\nPriceWaterhouseCoopers and the Italian Business Association.<\/p>\n
The parties elected on Monday an eight-member executive board
\nwhose term will run until the end of 2005.<\/p>\n
Apart from drafting an annual program, the board is also to
\nform a consultative board to provide overall guidance and review
\nthe annual program of EUROCHAM.<\/p>\n
\"We'll also make constant contacts and develop cooperation
\nwith the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry,\" said
\nFischaux.<\/p>\n
Asked about conditions in Indonesia that deter foreign
\ninvestors, Fischaux listed the unstable macroeconomic condition,
\nthe slow progress in banking reformation, and the lack of access
\nfor development.<\/p>\n
\"There are many potential locations in a country as big as
\nIndonesia. The government must strive for total development, not
\nonly in big cities like Jakarta,\" he said.<\/p>",
