EU welcomes peace deal implementation<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The 25-member European Union welcomed on Thursday the
\nstart of the formal implementation of the peace agreement in
\nNanggroe Aceh Darussalam, and highlighted the support that the EU
\nand five members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
\n(ASEAN) were providing through the Aceh Monitoring Mission (AMM),
\nthe British foreign minister said.<\/p>\n
Britain currently holds the EU presidency.<\/p>\n
\"As the presidency of the EU, I warmly welcome the start of
\nformal implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed
\nbetween the government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement in
\nHelsinki on 15 August,\" British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said
\nin a press release, which was sent to The Jakarta Post by the
\nBritish Embassy in Jakarta on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The peaceful settlement of the internal conflict in Aceh,
\naccording to Straw, will be of great benefit to Indonesia and the
\npeople of Aceh, as well as providing a very positive example
\nregionally and internationally. \"It will greatly assist in the
\nreconstruction and rehabilitation of Aceh following the tragic
\ntsunami there last December.\"<\/p>\n
The release said the launch of a peace mission in Aceh would
\nmark a new departure for European Security and Defense Policy.<\/p>\n
\"This will be its first mission in Asia, its first in
\ncooperation with ASEAN partners, and its first to carry out
\nmonitoring of this kind,\" Straw said. -- JP<\/p>",
