Brussels (ANTARA) - The European Commission announced on Wednesday\nplans to restrict children\u2019s access to social media, stating that the\nEuropean Union (EU) will propose a new \u2018Kids Act\u2019 aimed at protecting\nminors from online dangers.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the European Parliament, European Commission President\nUrsula von der Leyen stated that the commission would submit the draft\nlegislation on Thursday, introducing various levels of protection based\non a child\u2019s age.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo social media for those under 13. No private accounts for those\nunder 15,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Under the proposed approach, children aged 13 to under 15 would only\nbe permitted to use limited \u2018mini accounts\u2019 created and supervised by\nparents or guardians, featuring restricted functionalities and a usage\nlimit of one hour per day.<\/p>\n
For the 15 to 18 age group, social media platforms will be required\nto implement \u2018safety by design\u2019 measures, she noted.<\/p>\n
Von der Leyen said the initiative is driven by concerns regarding the\nimpact of social media and addictive digital designs on children,\nincluding sleep deprivation, anxiety, bullying, and self-harm.<\/p>\n
She also stated that the EU will work to shift responsibility onto\ntechnology platforms.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are reversing the burden of proof. Now, platforms must prove to\nus that they are safe,\u201d said von der Leyen.<\/p>\n
She added that the issue is not merely about minors\u2019 access to social\nmedia, but about the conditions under which social media platforms can\nreach children.<\/p>\n
\u201cEurope has the power to act. We are the ones who set the rules, not\ntechnology itself,\u201d she asserted.<\/p>\n
Von der Leyen noted that the EU\u2019s approach would extend beyond\nminors, considering that addictive digital designs can also impact\nadults.<\/p>\n
