EU satisfied with President Abdurrahman over East Timor<\/p>\n
LISBON (Reuters): European Union president Portugal said on
\nThursday it was satisfied that Indonesia's new president wanted
\nto help secure a lasting peace in East Timor.<\/p>\n
Portugal's Prime Minister Antonio Guterres said the bloc was
\nin a permanent dialog with Indonesia, aimed at clearing obstacles
\nto independence in the former Portuguese colony.<\/p>\n
"We have no doubts over President (Abdurrahman) Wahid's
\ncommitment to guarantee peace and stability," Guterres told a
\nnews conference on the fringes of an EU summit.<\/p>\n
He was speaking after meeting Timorese resistance leader Jose
\nAlexandre "Xanana" Gusmao.<\/p>\n
Gusmao thanked the international community for backing Timor
\nin its efforts to become fully independent.<\/p>\n
"The international community's support will be the foundation
\nfor East Timor to be a democratic state where human rights and
\njustice may be respected," he said.<\/p>\n
Gusmao said he did not oppose a recent statement by
\nAbdurrahman that he would pardon former armed forces chief Gen.
\nWiranto should he be found guilty of backing pro-independence
\nmilitias.<\/p>\n
"Bringing the (Indonesian) generals to trial is already an act
\nof goodwill," he said.<\/p>",
