EU lifts bans on RI fish exporters<\/p>\n

Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Rokhmin Dahuri
\nannounced on Wednesday that the European Union (EU) had lifted
\nbans on 13 of the 16 tuna exporter companies previously forbidden
\nto export fish to the region.<\/p>\n
\"We have sent an explanatory letter to the EU that most of the
\ncompanies have complied with the standards set by the EU,
\nincluding those regarding storage and quality control<\/p>\n
\"Just recently, I received a letter from the President of EU
\nstating that there would be no more problems with most of the
\ncompanies,\" Rokhmin said.<\/p>\n
He acknowledged that three companies were still banned from
\nexporting fish to the EU as they still could not meet the
\nstandards set by the grouping, but he declined to name them.<\/p>\n
The EU imposed the ban following the discovery of Indonesian
\ntuna in the EU market that failed to meet the EU standards.
\nRepresentatives from the EU were in Indonesia to inspect tuna
\nexporting companies from April 15 to April 22 this year.<\/p>\n
Rokhmin said that the bans had had little impact on Indonesian
\nfish exports as a whole as Indonesia and the EU had cooperated to
\nquickly resolve the problem.<\/p>\n
Indonesia is the fifth largest fish producer in the world with
\na total production of 6 million tons in 2003. The country
\nexported 696,290 ton of fish, worth over US$2 billion, in 2003,
\nan increase of 11 percent over 2002.<\/p>",
