EU-India summit starts in The Hague<\/p>\n
THE NETHERLANDS: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived on
\nMonday in The Hague for a summit with the Dutch EU presidency and
\nEU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, intended to firm up the
\nstrategic partnership between the European Union and India.<\/p>\n
Counterterrorism efforts and trade were also key issues of the
\nfifth EU-India summit.<\/p>\n
The EU wants to bring its relationship with India to \"the same
\nparity, density and quality\" as its relations with the United
\nStates, Canada, China, Russia and Japan, an EU official said last
\nweek.<\/p>\n
Before leaving for the Netherlands on Sunday, Singh said the
\nEU's hopes for closer relations showed that it recognized India's
\ngrowing stature and influence.<\/p>\n
\"Our relations are based on shared values -- democracy,
\npluralism, rule of law and a free press,\" Singh said.<\/p>\n
\"Our partnership has evolved over the years from economic and
\ndevelopment cooperation to a broad-based engagement on a wide
\nrange of issues -- globalization, terrorism, proliferation,
\nenergy and environment,\" he added.<\/p>\n
A senior European Commission source told journalists last week
\nthat the strategic partnership was a sign that India was gaining
